HRDN-SL Stands in Solidarity with Hellen Keller

The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone Stands in Solidarity with Those Affected by USAID Funding Suspension

Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone (HRDNSL) is deeply concerned by the recent suspension of US government funding for critical neglected tropical disease (NTD) programs, including USAID’s Act | West.  This abrupt decision threatens the health and well-being of millions of vulnerable people, particularly in the West African region.

The HRDN-SL recognizes the vital work of Helen Keller International and other organizations in combating NTDs.  For years, these organizations have diligently partnered with governments to improve the lives of communities across Africa, achieving significant progress in disease eradication.  The abrupt suspension of vital funding is a stark reversal of this progress and a serious setback to global health initiatives.

We understand that millions of people are now at risk of contracting and suffering from preventable NTDs.  The suspension of funding directly impacts access to vital healthcare services and threatens the hard-won progress made in recent years.

The HRDN/SL urges the United States Congress and Government to urgently reconsider its decision and restore funding for these critical programs.  The health and well-being of vulnerable populations should not be jeopardized due to political considerations. We stand in solidarity with those affected by this decision, and we call on all stakeholders to join the advocacy to ensure that the United States of America reinstate funding to support NTD programs.
