HRDN-SL Calls for Dialogue to Protect Vulnerable Sierra Leoneans Amid EU Funding Uncertainty

The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone (HRDN-SL) is concerned by reports that the European Union has withheld or postponed €18 million in budget support to Sierra Leone, with a further €22.5 million reportedly at risk in 2027.

HRDN-SL acknowledges the differing reports regarding the reasons for the pause in funding and does not seek to comment on these matters.

HRDN-SL recognizes the legitimate interest of the European Union and its
Member States in addressing drug trafficking and transnational organized crime, and respects the need for effective action and international cooperation to tackle these serious challenges.

At the same time, HRDN-SL is concerned about the potential impact of prolonged uncertainty or disruption to development financing, particularly on vulnerable and marginalized communities who depend on public services and programs supported by international partners.

Development assistance plays an important role in supporting communities,
strengthening public institutions, and providing access to essential services. Any prolonged disruption to such support could place additional pressure on people who are already facing significant economic and social challenges.

HRDN-SL therefore urges the Government of Sierra Leone, the European Union and the Government of the Netherlands to engage constructively and urgently to find common ground and resolve the issues at hand, while protecting the rights and welfare of Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable communities.
